The Khalifa Center for Genetic Engineering & Biotechnology (KCGEB) was established in 2014 by the United Arab Emirates University and the Ministry of Presidential Affairs to form a center of excellence for desert plants genetic engineering and biotechnology. The center is dedicated to the development of desert Plants biotechnological advancement and to support a sustainable desert agro-ecosystem for the UAE and the arid zones of the world. The main objective of the research at Khalifa Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology is to increase the ability of plants to drought, heat and salt tolerance.
The Khalifa Center for Genetic Engineering & Biotechnology (KCGEB), hosted by the College of Food and Agriculture at the UAEU, brings together researchers whose interests are in the broad areas of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology. Research focal areas of the Center include:
- Genetic transformation of local plant species
- Analytical gene quantification
- Propagation of transgenic plants
- Elucidating the mechanisms of action of gene products
